Lets start with the series part of the circuit.

While individual led bulbs are completely unharmed by being turned on and off rapidly the internal circuitry of the spotlight unit does not appear to like it at all.
The circuit described above cannot be used with 12v mr16 led spotlights of the type we sell in the reuk shop.
Rule number 2 from the series circuit bullet points proves that 12v dc isn t enough voltage to run all 9 leds in series 9 x 2 98 26 82v dc.
Fewer are also possible of course.
This is a simple led dimmer that has only 2 components.
Lets say we want to run a total of 9 cree xp l leds at 700ma each with a voltage of 12v dc.
How does the 12v strip dimmer circuit works.
Ic1 is a dual timer.
L1 and s1 can be adapted to suit a smaller current if required.
One is an n channel mosfet and a potentiometer.
Now rotate the potentiometer.
This will adjust the gate voltage.
The circuit can be operated with 9v to 12v dc but you can also operate it with 6v by changing the values of resistors r2 to r11 to 290 ohms.
Using a dimmer with 12v mr16 led spotlights.
The light dimmer circuit that we finally arrived at can easily drive 6 lamps of 10 w each.
The potentiometer is connected with the mosfet s gate pin.

The total output current of lm317 is 1 5a due to which we have used a separate current limiting resistor with each led which will protect them on the maximum current output from the ic.
